How to start Snowed Under
Leave the campfire with a plan so the first night does not wipe your tunnels.
Snowed Under puts you in first person on a buried mountain settlement. You are not running a city sim and you are not waiting for daily codes. You shovel, haul scrap, talk to Kai, and try to reach the steel radio tower before the cold or the story swallows you. Chilla’s Art lists two to four hours for a normal finish. Treat that as a story estimate, not a 100% estimate.
This page is the first-hour checklist. Pair it with Controls once you know the buttons, and with How to Dig as soon as you leave the immediate yard. If you already know the loop and only care about endings, skip ahead to the endings guide after a spoiler warning.
What you are actually doing
The shelter with the fire is home. Kai stays there. You go out, cut a path through snow, pick up scrap and canned food, and come back to dump materials and talk. Days move forward as you work and as conversations unlock. Buried buildings appear as you clear snow: an old house, a bus, interiors that feel like a train yard or a station, and other landmarks described on the map hub.
Steam achievements confirm the loop in plain language. First Steps asks you to dig your first snow. A Better Tool asks for the first shovel upgrade. Well Supplied and Prepared for the Storm track cans. Scrap Collector and Leave Nothing Behind track 50 and 100 scraps. A Signal in the Snow is the radio tower. You do not need those numbers on hour one, but they tell you the game is counting hauls, not hidden raid bosses.
Save like the game will freeze
Launch-week players reported freezes, especially around Day 3 when touching a backpack or viewing a photo prompt. Several reviews also said there is no comfortable autosave. Make a habit:
- Return to base when your pockets are full.
- Dump scrap and cans.
- Save before you go back out, and save again before you trigger a story object in the shelter.
- If the day clock stalls in darkness with wolves howling, do not keep digging for an hour hoping night will end. Read known bugs.
Losing a long tunnel network hurts more than dying to a wolf. Wolf deaths usually drop you nearby with little progress lost. A freeze can delete the last hour.
First hour route
Stay close to the fire. Japanese players noted that snow hardens as you leave Kai’s hub. That matches the upgrade fantasy: a fresh shovel feels like scraping ice with a spoon, and a upgraded shovel later carves rooms out of the field. Collect scrap in the near ring, grab cans when they spawn with junk, and buy the first shovel upgrade as soon as A Better Tool would pop.
Do not sprint for the tower silhouette. The steel tower is a late landmark. Early tunnels should connect the shelter to the nearest buildings so you can duck inside when night or wolves show up. Use a jump peek over berms when the snow filter whites out your sense of direction. The landmarks page explains binoculars from an upper floor and matching the in-game map.
Eat when stamina drops. Cans are not flavor text; Well Supplied wants 10 and Prepared for the Storm wants 20. Carry capacity upgrades matter once you stop making empty-handed walks. The upgrade planner ranks digging power first, then stamina, then pockets, which is what most launch players described.
People, tone, and what not to expect
Kai is the friend at camp. Steam and store copy treat those talks as the story spine. Players also mention Toshi and a voiced protagonist. You will find notes, charms, and a coin gacha that can grant Lucky Upgrade. You will not find an online lobby. Snowed Under is single-player.
Horror here is slow. Mixed Steam reviews complain that the open snow becomes a chore once the shovel is huge, and that interiors sometimes hold scrap instead of scares. Other players like the shovel itself. Go in expecting a digging loop with J-horror conversations, not a constant jumpscare corridor. The review hub unpacks who the game is for.
After the first upgrades, graduate to How to Survive before you push into dark buildings, then use the walkthrough only if you are stuck on a day transition or the tower climb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I save often in Snowed Under?
Yes. Launch reports describe freezes and a weak autosave. Dump scrap, then save at the shelter before story prompts.
Why is digging so slow at the start?
Snow is harder far from Kai's fire, and the first shovel is weak. Upgrade nearby scrap into digging power before long tunnels.
How long is the first playthrough?
The store says two to four hours. Document and charm completion can run longer. Patrons is extremely rare so far.
Is there a map?
Yes. Players use an in-game map and binoculars from a second floor. The map hub covers landmarks if you still get lost in whiteouts.
